With deep love, heavy hearts, and profound gratitude for his life, we announce the ascension into heaven of Jorge Armando Mendez, a beloved son, grandson, brother and friend. He was born on January 8, 1988 and passed suddenly to God's glory on July 10, 2025. Jorge was a bright light who had a heart that overflowed with love for God and mankind, and this love was felt intensely and unconditionally by those who were blessed to know him. Abundant laughter was the hallmark of interactions with him due to his remarkable sense of humor, but occasionally, conversations would turned to matters of the heart and tears would flow, as he was blessed with an astonishing ability to quickly form deep and meaningful bonds and create a safe space where individuals felt comfortable examining and unloading their burdens. Among his most admirable traits was his genuine and lifelong inclination to approach others without judgment, especially those whom society often cast aside; a quality observed in him since childhood.
A childhood diagnosis that projected his eventual complete blindness did not define or limit him. He readily embraced this characteristic, an inherited trait he shared with both his brother Miguel and his sister Sonia. Unphased by society's low expectations, he pursued his passions with fervor throughout his entire life. He entered and won several local dance contests as a child; these early victories were a harbinger of his future in performance. A lifelong fan of pro wrestling, he engaged in humorously reckless and memorable backyard wrestling antics with his brother, Miguel, an experience that solidified their bond while simultaneously nurturing his natural joy of performing. The passion that ultimately blossomed for him above all others was music, ignited when he suddenly decided to put strings on his dad's old guitar and began teaching himself to play. This marked the discovery of a new avenue for self-expression, healing, and forming connections. With guitar in hand, he went on to become an influential and well-known participant among Stockton's local music scene, creating several bands and acts spanning various musical genres, offering his talents as a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist. He drew great pleasure not just from performing, but also from teaching guitar and mentoring aspiring musicians. Beyond music, he cultivated many other passions, notably as an avid firearms aficionado who not only enjoyed honing his marksmanship, but was also sought after for his knowledge and skill in the repair, safe operation, and legal compliance concerning firearms, leading to connections with other enthusiasts.
However, his greatest source of pride and joy, above all accomplishments and passions, was his family, particularly being the son of humble, hard-working Christian parents who imbued him with their principles. This included his profound pride in his Mexican heritage (a sentiment that coexisted deeply with his American patriotism), his appreciation for his parents' diligent labor—including their work as migrant farm workers and other vocations—and the enduring faith in God they held throughout life despite any and all hardships. This same faith became a powerful guide in navigating many personal struggles throughout his own life, and ultimately led to a profound spiritual and lifestyle transformation, resulting in the elimination of harmful behaviors and sustained sobriety. Compelled by a strong sense of purpose, he dedicated the remainder of his life to helping others overcome various struggles, finding particular joy in assisting those battling substance abuse. True to his nature, he continued to use music to rejoice in every success, to celebrate life, and to offer God his gratitude.
He was preceded into Heaven by his father, Guadalupe Mendez. He is survived by his beloved mother, Maria Concepción De Mendez; his siblings, Sonia Mendez, Jose Mendez, Gustavo Mendez, Lorena Mendez, Miguel Angel Mendez, and David Mendez; and his grandmother, Amelia Aranda De Alaniz. He is also survived by his beloved nieces and nephews and many cousins, aunts and uncles. He will be fondly remembered by his many friends and by the countless individuals whose lives he positively impacted, often even in the briefest exchanges. May we honor his memory by choosing love and expressing it often, forgiving without fail those who have harmed us, and rejoicing and resting in the knowledge that no one is beyond redemption.
